The Importance of Insuring Pets Early

The Importance of Insuring Pets Early

Date posted: Nov 21, 2025

With rising costs of veterinary care, it makes sense that people want to find ways to minimize their pets' expenses. While preventative care, including at-home care and routine vet checkups is one way to help manage costs, the other is pet insurance.

Pet insurance is like a safety net for your pet, helping you cover the costs for unexpected illnesses and injuries and ensuring that your furry pal receives the treatment they need.

Why Timing Matters for Pet Insurance

As with most types of insurance, from your own health insurance to car insurance, timing is everything. Why? Because you never know when life may throw a curveball your way. The same goes for pet insurance. The earlier you sign up for a policy, the more prepared you'll be for any accidents or unexpected illnesses your pet may experience throughout their life.

You should also consider that many pet insurance policies have a waiting period before coverage becomes active. So, even if you sign up for a policy today, that doesn't mean that your pet is covered today. Waiting periods can range anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, reiterating the need to elect coverage as soon as possible.

Pre-Existing Conditions and Coverage Gaps

Another reason for insuring pets early is to get ahead of any potential conditions they may develop later. Of course, no pet parent wants to consider that their little furball might need treatment for an illness down the road, but just like with your own human health insurance, it's best to be prepared.

Many pet insurance companies do not cover pre-existing conditions, which refers to a health issue that occurred or showed signs before your policy's coverage begins. This means that if you sign up for a pet insurance policy after your dog or cat has already exhibited signs of a particular medical condition, they run the risk of being denied coverage for that condition.

Here's an example: Let's say that your Golden Retriever named Duke was diagnosed with glaucoma when he was 5 years old. You've been paying out-of-pocket for Duke's prescription medications to treat the condition, but now you want to purchase a pet insurance policy. Because Duke was previously diagnosed with glaucoma, his dog insurance policy likely won't cover it because it's considered a pre-existing condition. Instead, the policy will only include future unexpected illnesses or accidents, so you'll still be on the hook for Duke's glaucoma medications.

This is why pet insurance for puppies or pet insurance for kittens is the best choice, so that pre-existing conditions and any other gaps in coverage isn't a worry.

Benefits of Enrolling Puppies and Kittens

Cats and dogs of nearly any age (age restrictions vary across providers) can be eligible for pet insurance. Here are the benefits for both puppies and kittens.

Insurance Benefits for Puppies
  • Accident coverage: It's true that puppies are less likely to get certain medical conditions typical of older dogs, but just because your puppy is young and spritely doesn't mean that they are less at risk of experiencing an injury. From a swallowed toy to a fractured leg from too much roughhousing, your puppy can get the treatment they need.

  • Illness coverage: Puppies' immune systems are still developing, meaning that they may be prone to certain infections or even gastrointestinal issues from eating something they weren't supposed to. Pet insurance can help them get the right medications.

Insurance Benefits for Kittens
  • Accident coverage: Kittens can be little mischief-makers too. Navigating the world around them means pouncing from lofty heights or eating something that they're curious about. In other words, injuries can happen. That's where pet insurance can help their pet parents cover the cost of treatment.

  • Illness coverage: If your kitten develops an unexpected illness or medical condition that requires veterinary care or medication, a pet insurance policy may kick in to help them get the treatment they need.

The Cost of Waiting Too Long

Costs of care for your pet can quickly add up, with or without insurance. But here's the clincher: Pet insurance can help pay for covered treatments, but without a policy, you'll have to pay for them out of pocket.

Getting a policy early on means that you won’t have to worry about new injuries and illnesses not being covered and you'll save more money in the long run.

Lifetime Coverage: Protecting Pets at Every Stage

As a pet parent, you get a front-row seat to your dog or cat's life, including all the highs, lows, silly antics, and comforting snuggles. And if you bring home a puppy or kitten, you have the privilege of watching them move through all their life stages, as they learn how to navigate their new home, go on family adventures, and move into their twilight years.

Signing up for pet insurance early helps to ensure that you can keep them happy and healthy for as long as possible. Your dog or cat can be covered by a pet insurance policy that keeps them moving and grooving through every stage, from puppyhood or kittenhood to adulthood. Of course, getting a policy at some point in their life is better than not at all, but lifetime pet insurance coverage should be the goal. And that starts from the moment they come home.
